"The term reboot, in media dealing with serial fiction, means to discard much or even all previous continuity in the series and start anew with fresh ideas" - Wikipedia

Misuse of words in the English language isn't anything new. DC has stated multiple times it's NOT a reboot.

There is nothing said anywhere that this continuity has been discarded. The only thing that makes people assume such things are all the costume switches IE. Grayson back to Nightwing and Barbara Gordon walking again.

Reboot, remake, retcon. Each one of these words is used so many times that nobody can be sure of its meaning anymore. I mean, all three of them can apply to what DC is doing here. They're rebooting, they're remaking their entire universe or they're retconning the timeline.

Or they could be creating another timeline and Marty McFly has to get back in time back to the dance so that he can get the almenac back from Biff.

Fuck if I know what's correct anymore. I mean, movies that are being passed off as Remakes are Reboots and reboots are actually remakes. It's a mess.

But, this is what I think:

Reboot - "The term reboot, in media dealing with serial fiction, means to discard much or even all previous continuity in the series and start anew with fresh ideas" - Wikipedia. But, that doesn't mean that reboots can't be temporary. Or that they can't be the result of an event within the story.

Remake - To take the characters, the setting and the story and redo everything with current technology. Possibly even put the setting in modern day than in the time the original story was in.

Retcon - This is where it gets tricky. A retcon is to take something in the story and do something different with it, so that the timeline after this is altered. But, a retcon could also be a Partial Reboot, meaning that something in the distant past is changed, causing a significant change in years of the timeline. As seen in One More Day. Because wasn't that what One More Day was for. to "discard much or even all previous continuity in the series and start anew with fresh ideas"

Yeah, it is a really pissy game.

Anyways, I have to wonder if they're going to have the stones to stick with this reboot/retcon/whatever. Like you said, Link, this is all going to happen in-story, meaning there will always be a way to pussy out of it. I'm thinking they might slap on "Ultimate" on the new universe after a year and bring back the old universe.

As already pointed out, this is being done with DC's time travel rules, which aren't the same as Marvel rules. When time changes, it changes and the only ones not affected are those existing outside of time. This means that certain time traveler characters should be able to not be affected by this...except Booster Gold is on a Justice League cover for some reason, which makes zero sense because he's currently the most important anything existing outside time right now.

Does that matter? He's leading a team for Christsakes, he's front and center where as Batman is BEHIND him on the cover. He's the star of the book, I'd say that's a pretty big deal. Whatever happens, the post-Flashpoint universe/timeline IS perfect/normal/whatever, most likely the reason why Booster Gold is happy to just chill out and be on a team.

Also, PJ your "retcon" concept doesn't work for OMD. Both Parker and Mary Jane are fully aware of the deal with Mephisto. They were still married, and even engaged to be married after the deal with Mephisto, he still revealed his identity during Civil War, etc. I get what you're trying to say, I'm just trying to say that when I see retcon I think "Green Goblin isn't actually dead, he's just been hiding in Europe." and when I see reboot I think more of "Ultimate Universe" where everyones origins are retold and you start from square one and take new directions.

I have no idea how Flashpoint is evolving since ... well, no DC comics are being sold here in stores. So I don't know how the change is going to happen. I could look it up ... but I'm lazy. Can someone catch me up? Also, existing out of time ... I wonder if that still applies if the entire universe is rewritten.

And I had no idea Peter was aware of the deal. I knew Mary Jane knows ... Well, I now remember I knew anyways xD

That was announced before the relaunch was. Its the natural progression from where Generation Lost wrapped up.

Also, FYI you avatar looks like it says Their destruction is my erection due to the font. Just thought I'd point that one out.

Shit just got real in here.

Anyways, I just started up a subscription box at the local comic store, something I haven't had in years. I'm debating on what I want to start collecting again, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to at least go with the classics.
