Apparently somebody found a way to install a custom firmware on the PS3 that allows special firmware apps to run, however no means of pirating actual PS3 games has been attempted, as far as I can tell.

So far only a few apps have been made to work for it.

Depending on which side you believe, this will either be firmware patched *or* is impossible to be firmware patched and can only be resolved with future hardware updates.

Anyways, took a while, but it has finally happened. I wonder how long it will be before people are emulating shit on their PS3's.

It's about god damn time. Though i have to tip the hat to Sony for holding up so long, really, I thought this was going to happen years ago, and in small ways it has, but nothing ever concrete. If this is true, then i know a lot of people who have gaming boners right now. As for me, honestly, I don't think I care enough to hack my system anymore. I'm at the point where I don't play as many games as I used to, and the ones I do, I pay for because I want to support the dev team that made it.

To be frank, the new firmware isn't able to pirate PS3 games, but I think it'll be a matter of time before pirates decide to do that. I on the other hand am only gonna use the custom firmware for emulators and stuff, since some of my old school consoles are broken.

Did you even read the article? The root key is to the PS3 is based on the hardware. If they patched it, the PS3 software would be rendered useless

Basically, Sony is fucked

Nothing about this makes pirating games easier, really. I mean, the games are already signed, what makes a ripped copy not run is something else entirely.

What this allows you to do is run unofficially signed software on the system without modification of existing systems. Meaning, that even unmodified PS3s with custom firmwares could run applications made using this information.

The hackers who worked on it have gone on record saying they want to use it responsibly, and generally, they're honest about such things. What they want, which is a perfectly legitimate desire, is for people to be able to run their own software on the machine.

It just kinda bugs me that people can't see any possible application to utilizing a closed platforms hardware outside copyright infringement. It's ridiculous.

Also, Sony is not, in fact, "fucked". They could require that all software requires a patch to use a new signing technique and then a firmware update could remove this entirely. I imagine there's other lock out mechanisms they're not going to tell the public about.

Sweet. Maybe now some hackers can let me backup my saves that Sony thought would be a good idea to lock to a console, because it's 294% not likely to fail, amirite?

Because someone always ruins it for everyone. Some jack fuck is always like "How do I get free such and such on my such and such?" People do it with music, movies, everything. So the moment you do something that could enable people to get free shit and fuck you out of your money, of course that's what they're going to be thinking about.

Which is why I say depending on which side you believe. What is Sony supposed to say?

"Well, you got us guys, good job! Have fun pirating the shit out of our shit! Hold on a second while we Vaseline up our collective assholes so you can bend us over and rape the shit out of us!"

No. Sony has said exactly what they are supposed to say - that they have the issue well in hand and it will be rectified. It doesn't matter what any article says about anything. It's so god damn early in the event that there are still way too many unanswered questions.

Are there any news sites or blogs that show official word from Sony about this? I tried googling but all I find are sites about hacking.

I dont really care. I just want to be able to transfer my saves as well. I can care less about trophies or achievements. I am tired of stupid stuff like it. They act like anyone really cares if someone has more trophies than them. All they need to do is allow saves to be transferred but transferred saves have trophies blocked if they care that much >_< how about someone hack that? O_o

Yes. One hint at possible action is, they can effectively brick systems that have modified firmwares. When the PS3 boots up it does a error log upload to Sony as well as download some data, one of the pieces of information it sends out is the id of the console and the firmware versions. If that comes back as "not official" they can target your system and execute a lock out procedure. One that I doubt they'll alleviate for free.

In other words ... if you want to mess with this, as douchey as Sony's idea is, you'll likely want to use a second system that you'll never take online AT ALL.

However, this is likely something Sony doesn't want to do, in the end it would only hurt them and they're aware of that. It's the reason why they're mostly staying quiet.

See, my point is made for me. We're not allowed to have anything nice because everyone wants something for free instead.

That's why we should have adopted communism while we could have. Then it all would be free!
