Editied due to Link's post:

5) Mario World - Loads of secrets and hidden paths. Takes a long time to get 100% in the game and I believe it's the first game I ever did this (gotten 100% completion)
4) Caslevania IV - First Castlevania game I ever played and dear god did it kick ass!
3) Chrono Trigger - Hands down the best JRPG I've ever played.
2) A Link to the Past - I've said this numerous times but I love this game so much I have to replay it at least once a year. Best Zelda game in my mind and all the rest went down hill (just my opinion)
1) Super Metroid - Like Zelda, I have to replay this game once a year. Not only replay it, 100% complete it. Love everything about the game, music, bosses, secrets. Can't get enough!

Honorable mentions go to: Act Raisor (1&2), Final Fantasy 2&3, Mario Kart and Mega Man X

I kind of want to kill this topic since I'm not a huge fan of list topics unless they serve a purpose (although one could argue my 'put these in order' topic didn't.) If possible, could we please try to give a bit of a description as to WHY these are our favorite SNES games instead of just listing the title?

3. Super Metroid
2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
1. Chrono Trigger (My favoritest game)

Super Mario All-Stars
Spoiler
It's one of the rare cases that Nintendo has gone back and improved, not just one, but FOUR of their games! Not to mention, they're four of the best games released on the NES. If I had the combo cart with Mario World, it'd be in this position.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Spoiler
Most people consider this the pinnacle of Zelda. I do like the 3D games, I don't think they're shit like most gaming extremists exclaim. However, I still think Link to the Past did a lot of things right that haven't been replicated in the series since. For example, the world feels enormous. The game has a more fantasy-epic-tale feeling associated with it than the 3D games have ever had.
Super Metroid
Spoiler
I think this game started the whole "Video Game Blockbuster" trend. It's a tight and trim game, everything that's here HAS to be here. Nothing feels wasted. It feels like the smart action movie of games. It's not just big awesome set pieces, it's more than that. The environment and circumstances are compelling. I absolutely love this game, and it honestly is interchangeable with slot 2.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Spoiler
How I feel about Yoshi's Island is how most people currently feel about Kirby Epic Yarn. It warms the soul. The game obviously has a story book feel to it, but it feels like one of those awesome story books that's OK to like as an adult. Baby Mario is annoying as shit, but would you really want it any other way? Nintendo if you want to bring this back proper, do a coop game, ala New Super Mario Bros. Wii where each player controls a Yoshi with a Mario Bros. character on their back. Please!?
Chrono Trigger
Spoiler
It's my favorite game. I still haven't played anything that felt so encompassing. Sure many other games are more immersive and people would argue there's plenty better RPGs (most often one I hear is FF3/6) but this game does SO MUCH right. There's no mandatory level grinding. Which, at the time, was unprecedented. You can play through the entire game, just by the winding path of the plot and be able to do it! There's so many choices to make that do affect the world ... but it's not to such a fine granularity that no one else will experience the same choices. The game is outright gorgeous, and easily one of the best looking SNES games. And while the plot mostly follows a traditional jRPG type plot ... it often zigs when you expect it to zag. The characters are all interesting (which is saying a lot for a jRPG!) and you legitimatelly want to find out more about the world. I love this game so much. And don't cheat yourself by playing only the remakes, those are SO MUCH easier than the original release.
Better? :p

Hey, I love how Dracula X makes favorite lists here! Very underrated game, though not according to collectors!

My list probably changes every few weeks based on what mood I'm in to play certain games. Let's see...

5. Actraiser (Oh, how I miss Enix without Square)
4. Final Fantasy III (the last "great" Final Fantasy game?)
3. Donkey Kong Country (all sorts of reasons I SHOULDN'T have it on my list, but I love it)
2. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (The last great Zelda game - I'm the extremist Crono mentioned)
1. Super Turrican II (most underrated action game on the SNES? PSYCHO TIP: Yes.)

Lots of fantastic "must plays" on the SNES, with some of them being overrated in my opinion, though still very good games.

3.Kirby Super Star (one of my favorite games as a child)
2.Super Mario RPG (got me into the RPG genre, and was loads of fun)
1.F-Zero (Epic Music, and fuckin great game play, my fav SNES game)

How about I just give two of my favorite Snes games and tell you why they rock.

Donkey Kong Country 2
This game kicks ass. There are three things I love about this game. I love the entire pirate theme this game has going for it and the atmosphere of the levels. I love the animals that you can hi-jack mid stages to help you get to puzzles (The snake is especially kick ass), and I love the music. Good god do I love the music to this game. This was back when making music for a game was an art, and not a chore.

Mega Man X
I didn't grow up with Mega Man on the NES. Instead I grew up with Mega Man X on the Snes. It will always be a mystery as to why Mega Man 2 makes people wet them selves and how Mega Man X hardly ever gets mentioned. It's a mature, in your face version of Mega Man with a concrete story that surprisingly does a lot to make you care about the characters but at the same time doesn't take away from the action. The graphics are amazing and really shows off the reasons why 16-bit graphics rock and the music is sex to my ears. You also get lots of bad ass upgrades (The X buster full upgrade is insane)
and I aways thought the idea of the robot masters being modeled after animals was clever and is exactly what was needed to break the drawn out cycle of lame uninspired robot master names of the 8-bit Mega Man games. Oh, and Zero is a total BAD ASS!

Things only got better with Mega Man X 3. Talk about one of the most bad ass moments in video game history permanently etched in my memories.

That whole last post was a great one. I totally agree.

I just think that Mega Man 2 is THE quintessential Mega Man game, and really set a standard throughout the entire series and games in general. On the other hand, Mega Man X is exactly what I thought the series needed to get back into the swing of things, and it's a damn shame that Inafune's ideas to end it at X5 ended up being a mild suggestion and they jumped the shark at X6 and on. And while I'm not usually big on story in games in general, X2 and X5 did it PERFECTLY. Anybody who played through all the NES games and then beat X and then X2 and saw the ending of X2 for the very first time had to shit themselves when they found out about Zero's ties to the first series in one sentence.

Point is, DKC2 and MMX are masterpieces and are some of the finest on the SNES, and any console for that matter.

Unfortunately, after that Mega Man took a turn for the worst with ROCKMAN.EXE

Although, I will admit, it was a clever little alternate universe concept for at least the first game, but quickly became played out by the 2nd game.

I think Inafune was only the producer for that, right? As a general rule, I tend to shy away from games in a series that the creator wasn't directly hands-on with, one of the only exceptions being Snake's Revenge, which I found to be very underrated, while Kojima's own MGS2 I found very overrated. A George Lucas comparison to be made, maybe?

Still, my little personal taste is in trilogies. I believe most game series should stop at 3 "episodes" and then they can try some re-launch or new idea or concept if they use the series name.

Oh, and Hagane. Play that.

I love how you can look at most any SNES Top 5 list here and see some fantastic games. A real credit to the console. Virtually every generation after this, with their lists of games, has at least one or two that could be debated are not fun or good at all.

The SNES has always been my favorite console, most of my childhood was spent in front of a TV watching my brother play until he got bored so I could get my turn.

so here's my top 5:

5. Kirby Super Star

4. Final Fantasy VI

3. Sparkster

2. Mega Man X

1. Super Metroid

You mean Final Fantasy III? Ha ha haha! Seriously though, the SNES was better in a lot of ways for the more obscure games like Ninja Warriors or either Turrican game. But there's no question; for you Square, Nintendo or Enix fanboys, this was their prime for quality titles. In Nintendo's case, so much so that they never innovated any given franchise ever again!

I will say Zelda is very close to being my favorite, but the music and atmosphere of Super Metroid is what really does it for me.

5. DKC - The graphics floored me the first time I saw this game, the gameplay was even better.
4. FF3 - The only good Final Fantasy game.
3. Illusion of Gaia - Get on my level, nerd.
2. Chrono Trigger - Final Fantasy sucks in comparison to this masterpiece.
1. Super Metroid - Few games have ever come close to being this awesome, I have yet to 100% but will one day.
