Sonic the Hedgehog
this game isn't terrible but it's certainly not amazing. the problem with this game is the controls. the controls are slippery when trying to land on a platform and feels stiff when trying to jump in the air when running and also since he runs real fast he is always running into and landing on shit like spikes and little crab things. I am fully expecting to get an earful for this but hopefully someone here feels the same way.

Shadow of the Colossus
very boring. one of the main appeals of the game is suppose to be it's rich and engaging open world to explore but there isn't anything to see or do. if they are going to have an open world environment to explore then they need to make it feel/look alive with plenty of NPCs, towns, dungeons, treasures and what not. it's all just trees, grass, mountains, etc. the battle scenes with the colossus are pretty cool.

Or, you know, it could be that you just suck at the game. Sure the last 10 years have been shit for Sonic, but to include the Genesis era and say those have poor controls, I'm sorry but that's blasphemy in my book.

The game you really should put up there is Final Fantasy VII

gee! I guess you got me there :meh:

in the end it doesn't matter what I think. fanboys will defend this game till the very end even though the controls are complete shit. also i'm talking about the first sonic game. if ya couldn't tell I was being sarcastic with my first statement. I don't suck at sonic 1, the controls suck and sonic fanboys will never admit it. and yeah the controls are incredibly SLIPPERY. don't be stupid...

I can tell you right now, as a person who has religiously to this day played and beaten the original game over 100 times, I never had a problem with poor controls. The only gripe I have whenever I revisit the old game is that the spin dash wasn't invented yet.

Classic response to someone who states why they dislike a game or a has a specific criticism about that game? It's not like that, you just suck.

It has poor control - no, you're just a fucking retard.
It has bad graphics - WRONG BITCH, YOU'RE FUCKING BLIND!!!!
The music is monotonous - NUH-UH ASS PUPPET, CLEAN THAT FUCKING SUGAR DADDY EARWAX OUCH YO EAR!!!
Single player is boring - THEN GO MASTURBATE, 'very nice gay man'!!!!

Jesus that gets annoying.

Look, I fucking love Shadow of the Colossus. Fucking LOVE IT. I think it is one of the top 3 best games on PS2 and ranks pretty high in my top games of all time, that includes past and present. It's a beautiful, engaging, engrossing, timeless fucking tale told via a medium that I thought would never be able to pull off something like it. I can put people in front of it who hate games and they play the shit out of it and beg for more. It's the mother fucking masterpiece, ok? I'll fucking kill anyone with my bare hands who says otherwise.

But I totally see your point about the vast emptiness of the world. Plus you have to travel a long way to find the next colossus, the camera sucks and honestly, I'm not sure how well those graphics are going to age. I mean I enjoy the look of it now but who knows how it will look in 20 years. I can see how many people think it's overrated, even though I think it is under-appreciated.

Edit: I will be first in line to get the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD collection for PS3.

I do not consider myself a picky gamer and often when I'm watching a review of something I sigh with disappointment when someone complains about something small and almost trivial in a game, but to quote the nerd here "when something is fucked up, it's fucked up". I knew I would get an earful about this opinion of mine so let me rephrase this. these games are not way in any way terrible, I just think they shouldn't be called masterpieces. I still think the controls in sonic are shit and Shadow of the Colossus gets real boring but sonic 1 still has a classic soundtrack and the fights with the colossus are epic. also what's with everyone saying I suck at sonic 1. anyone who says that can shove that game up their rusty sandy vagina!!! until you have seen me play sonic and observed that my skill in that game is just about the same as the next bumbling idiot who says it's a masterpiece, you can shut your hole! honestly I think most of you retards who think it's a god damn masterpiece of a video game just jumped on the bandwagon of people who think it's great because you know, that seems the popular thing to do in our culture today...

:uhh:

I'll agree that I didn't enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog much, but Shadow of the Colossus I can just immerse myself in.
Granted, it takes forever to get anywhere, but that's kind of what I like about it. You can just dive into the game and get lost in the landscapes.

To be fair, you did take that out of context. If you are going to quote it, quote the whole thing.

Taking specific partial quotes out of anybodies post can prove anything. It's like taking the best/worst clips of a game and putting them to music. I could make Superman 64 look good with the right song and specific cuts of the game.

Maybe.

And Maximus, I wasn't trying to give you an earful, I was siding with you. Except for saying SotC isn't a masterpiece. It is.

That pretty much explains it. That's pretty much the first thing anyone says when they complain about good games, and trying to convince others that they are bad. Pretty much every time I hear anyone complain about a game like Street Fighter IV, they always point to the controls. So I would have a match with them, and I would wreck their ass (and if you don't know, I suck at SFIV on a tourney level). Same thing with Halo 3, everyone who complains says that it's overrated garbage and FPS controls on consoles are fucked up. Same thing with SFIV, I went into a match and wrecked their ass (although to be fair, I'm rather skilled). Pretty much with my experience playing with others, if you rag on a good game because you claim it has bad controls, 99% of the time you suck at said game. Simple logic

I love threads like this. No, really. I think there needs to be more criticism of games (or gaymes) people consider sacred. Of course, my two games off the bat are:

Ocarina of Gay (beloved by most game fans who don't like sports)

Madden '95 (beloved by sports game fans who don't like sports)

I certainly think people ought to think long and hard before considering a game a "masterpiece." There are far too many subjective factors to consider.

As for the controls thing, no question, you have a point, Koari. Probably the one of the worst offenders I can think of is the AVGN's very brief look at Tron: Deadly Discs. The controls in that game were flawless. I mean objectively, if you consider the controller you had to work with.

I honestly don't think it's possible to bitch about controls for any 2D game, unless maybe like the physics of the world are all super crazy and it feels slippery like you're gliding on ice the whole time or something when you walk.

Maximus you're making it sound like everyone is persecuting you when no one is. At most, Koari is arguing that you're not very good at the game, but no one else has felt insulted by your opinions. It's not really helping you any when you make it sound like nobody but fanboys will defend the game, everyone who loves it regards it as a masterpiece, and people who do find it as one of the defining moments of gaming are just sheep who like it because it's popular. You've gone beyond criticizing or even insulting the game because you think it deserves it to preemptively insulting anyone who's willing to challenge your opinion because you stated it on a public forum and made a thread about it.

As for Shadow of the Colossus, while exploring the world and searching for the next Colossus is, admittedly, boring at times, I actually liked how lonely and empty the world is. I feel that adding anything to it might ruin the atmosphere of the game, that being that you're all alone save for your horse and 16 giant creatures you must kill. Searching for the next Colossus adds build up to the fight, as you are forced to search and basically hunt for your next opponent. If you want towns or dungeons, I think you don't quite get the game. Personally, I never saw the open world as a main appeal, even though you spend plenty of time in it. Gameplay wise, it is clearly focused on the Colossus fights, basically nothing but a boss rush mode game. The open world is really just there to immense yourself into the game, flesh out the game's world quite a bit and to add a gap of time between each boss.

Like I've said before, however, I can see this getting pretty boring. I prolly wouldn't replay it that often if I had to hunt down the Colossi every time. I can't really say that the game would be better off with a menu though, letting you select which colossus to fight next, but I think it'd better off then what you suggested. I just think "fleshing out" the open world would be more like time wasters or distractions from the core game (which is just having a bunch of giant video game boss fights). I suppose if they were implemented brilliantly it could work, but I still would have prolly liked the empty world or just a menu more. In the end I find the empty open world as an essential part of establishing the game's atmosphere and setting, but I know it's quite clearly not something for everyone. It can get both boring and tedious, especially when you want to just skip hunting for your 600 ft tall prey and get to the killing. I can understand that.

I really just don't agree with the argument that if someone feels a game is flawed for X reason, it means that they just suck at the game. That is the equivalent of a 8 year or response to an insult saying, "oh yeah, well....you're ugly!!!!" I mean, come on, that shows nothing but lack of intelligence and class. Here's how this conversation went.

Prime: The controls are slippery
Kaori: You just suck at the game.

I mean, really, which point sounds legit and which sounds like an elementary school playground insult? What the fuck does skill level have to do with evaluation of how well a game controls? You don't have to be an expert to decide if you like how a game feels and plays. From the second I play a game I know pretty much right away if I like how the controls feel. I'm by no means "good" at the game at that point...does that make my opinion invalid? If I play the game enough I may learn how to adapt and use the physics and play control to my advantage but it doesn't mean that the control has fundamentally changed with my skill level, I've just learned how to use it. Sonic jumps the exact same way the 1,000,000th time as the first time.

Secondly, when someone throws out the word "blasphemy" you are basically saying that you equate your like of said game to religion. People follow religions blindly with no empirical evidence of why they should be other than "God's real because I believe he's real." Saying Sonic is great because you have mastered it but failing to address peoples feelings of its shortcomings except to say they suck, well...that's basically someone saying I'm going to hell because I think gods a sham. When I ask why they think that they say because it just is, or because the bible says so, so I best start praying up. It's a poor argument that not only doesn't help their argument, it reinforces mine because they feel so threatened by what I say there must be some truth to it.

That being said, I stand by SotC being a masterpiece. I have a little shrine to it that I light incense around to ward off evil spirits and everything. I don't use the term masterpiece lightly either. It's like, SotC, salt and vinegar kettle chips and Army of Darkness...that's about it.

1. Spell my name right

2. It may sound like a childish argument, but is it wrong? Considering all you do in the game is run, jump and spin, what makes the controls bad?

I couldn't agree more with you on this one, saying I just suck at the controls seems like a cop-out argument. also, if I came off as a douche bag to you or anyone else than I apologize. Your opinions on this are really good in my book even though you still think Shadow of the Colossus is great and I'll admit that it's not a bad game, it's just not that engaging to me. also, I know the title of this is bashing the games and my posts say that I don't think they are terrible games which seems like a contradictory but I only put that as a title so people would take a look at it and obviously it seemed to work lol.

That statement is really funny because saying a good game sucks because of bad controls is a cop-out argument in of itself, especially simple commands to 2D sidescrollers

how many times do I need to say this? I don't think this game is overly terrible, I just think the controls could be improved. me saying "the controls are the reason the game sucks" being a cop-out argument wouldn't make sense because I never said the game sucked to begin with, I only think the controls do. also, it wasn't an argument. in my first post when I said how I think the controls suck I wasn't arguing anything at all to anyone. how could I be arguing if I was the first person to post?

:-?
