My 360 won't read any discs I put in it. I tried using a DVD lens cleaner disc I got at an electronics store a bajillion times and its still either refusing to read discs I put in it or giving me disc read errors.

What can I do to remedy this? I don't have the money to buy a new system or get it sent to Microsoft to get fixed, so please don't recommend I do those.

I had this problem earlier this year. If you send it in, it will cost, if I remember right, $100 to get it fix. I eventually got the RROD, lucky me I got it fixed for free...oh wait, they didnt fix. Either UPS or Xbox lost my system and I had to wait almost 3 months for them to send me a "new" system.

Sounds like you're fucked, if you have any warranty on it you can't open it up or you fuck yourself, especially if you get a RROD in the future.

Well that blows. Maybe you can sell a couple of games and use the money to get it fixed. The games are useless if you can't play them anyway.

My "backup" 360 won't read discs anymore which makes absolutely no sense because it was only used for probably 10-20 hours in total. It probably got damaged or something when I moved. I took it to a local gaming store to see if they would fix it and they said that people tend to pay pretty good money for broken 360's on eBay, like around $60 or so. I guess that is our best bet!

Sending it in to Microsoft isn't your only option. Try looking on craigslist for someone who works on 360's. You can usually find a few people in most major towns who will fix your shit for like 50$ + parts. I have known quite a few people who have had their systems worked on by some local modder who will throw in a new DVD ROM drive or something and their systems have worked flawlessly ever since. Just keep in mind if parts and labor gets near new system price then you may just want to bite the bullet and go new.

Does the slim model work well? Also can I transfer the games I have on my hard drive to it? I know slim and fat model 360s don't have interchangable hard drives.

I'm sure a transfer cable would suffice

hate to say it but it sounds like you are boned, once the laser goes out that is pretty much it, either pony up to fix it or get a new system

only third alternative is if it is still under warrenty is to force a red ring and take your chances sending it in

You can get a transfer kit that will move over everything. They also made the process easier since you can move stuff on a usb jump drive. DLC and XBLA games can be downloaded again. Just don't forget to transfer your lisences over to the new console.
