one thing I never understood is why people hate the psp. I mean, is it really that bad?

in my experience, people don't hate it, they just don't see it as worth buying. there are a handful of games worth buying (like the DS, frankly), but most have already bought a DS. they don't feel like spending another $170 to play something on the go, even though the DS/PSP's library of games are vastly different from each other. the PSP Go doesn't help, as most people see it as a wrong move on Sony's part (the price tag and being unable to play UMDs being the main issue). Most people aren't too concerned with it since it's not intended to replace the PSP-3000 (as far as I've been told), just as an alternative. however, some people are rather ignorant of that fact and think Sony wants to get rid of UMDs altogether.

I have 4 PSP games in total.
-Daxter (Which turned out to be pretty boring)
-Tekken Dark Resurrection (Which is just a portable Tekken 5)

and the only 2 games that I really play on it are:
-Sega Mega Drive Collection
-Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded

It's just the DS fanboys that hate it.

I like it. It doesn't have a lot of good games, but then again, DS doesn't have a lot of good games either. But both systems still give me enough portable entertainment.

Basically what sollah said. I don't hate it, I just don't see a point in getting one when I have my DS. And the price doesn't help.

DS is cheaper.
DS games are cheaper.
DS has a longer battery.
More people have a DS making it easier to play multiplayer.
DS has a wider variety of games.

Most people don't hate the PSP, I liked mine a lot when it used to work. But after two rounds of it breaking and having to send it away for repairs I gave up on it.

Reasons for why I hate the PSP:
#1. Terrible games for the first few years that it was out, now there are some, but not enough for me to buy it again.
#2. The games that psp fans boast about are games that I'd rather die than play on a 4 inch screen. Why would I want to play GTA, MGS, or Tekken on a small ass screen like that? Games like loco roco and patapon are ok, but I'm not spending $200-$250 to play games like that.
#3. Most good games are also just ps1/ps2 games that I've already played in the past.
#4. Games that require analog use are terrible due to the one badly positioned deformed nub that falls off constantly.
#5. The psp itself is bulky and uncomfortable.
#6. It's taking budget away from a system with much more potential(ps3), or any other project they could work on instead of the psp.

Having said all that, I'm sure I come across as a PSP hater. Really, I'm not, just indifferent to it. It does nothing special to stand out (oooh, close to ps2 graphics on a tiny ass screen), it's over-priced, and I'm just not a huge on-the-go gamer. I mean, it's not a terrible system, there are some good games for it, but it's just not that impressive.

PSP's are fine if you want to home brew but apart from that they aren't much good. I hate the software updates, the loading times and unless you have a 3000 model, the screen resolution.

Frankly the PSP is a dying model and will go the way of many other hand held consoles. You will still get the people who love using it despite the faults it has and I'm happy for them that they have found something they enjoy using but it will never be a mainstream handheld again.

DS is more popular because it's so much easier to use, has more popular games on it that people want and targets all age groups.

I always felt the reason why the PSP hasn't had a good life span falls squarely on Sony. Its never had the right marketing strategy. First it was "hey our handheld has better graphics then the DS" and yet it had only a handful of good games released for it. Then they went through like 12 different iterations (here in the US) in 5 years, and none of them really had any drive behind them. There was the original, then the slim, then several colored variant bundles, then the 3000, then the PSPGO in both black and white, and then when that failed they reverted their attention back to the 3000. Sony has also been doing this with PS3 too and all it really does is confuse and annoy consumers seeing as how they now are on their 11th model (again going by US releases).

With that said though I do own a PSP and I enjoy it. I got it originally to play Castlevania X Chronicles and Silent Hill Origins. Since then I've gotten God of War, Metal Gear and the Persona titles for it.

I think one of the main reasons for the ill-perceived PSP is that Nintendo has had a virtual monopoly on the hand held gaming system market for as long as there have been hand held gaming systems. Sega made a run, a damn good run, and should have come out ahead (god damnit, why on earth didn't you ADVERTISE, Sega!?! WHY!? Gamegear had color! A TV TUNER! The Nomad WAS a portable genesis! WTF?!). Sony's brought something just as competitive to the table but between their marketing strategies and Nintendo's inevitable consumer fan base (from the monopoly) I don't see them taking the mantle away any time soon. Or ever.

The one big reason sega sucked with the game gear is because of the battery life. I would burn AA's up to wazoo on long car rides...3 hrs compared to the GB's 10 hour lifespan. seriously I was a kid...and I was broke. My parents got irritated... end of story.

honestly I don't own a psp right now but I did and I had a lot of fun with it. maybe it's just me and the fact that i don't really say something sucks or isn't worth buying unless it is truly broken and virtually unplayable but that is far from the case with the psp. I think the psp does have some minor flaws but nothing that will ruin the experience, and they do have some decent games for it if people actually took the time to do some research on it.

anyways most of the negative things about the system that people point out just seem so... weak like "OH NOES IT'S HEAVY AND CLUNKY" or "IT'S GOT NO GAMES FOR IT" even though there are a decent amount of games for it if you aren't extremely picky.
