I was thinking about this the other day when I was watching some YouTube videos of a playthrough of Super Mario RPG for the SNES.

I remember back in the day the commercials for it on TV and thinking "OMG! I love Mario and there is a new Mario game coming out! I can't wait to play it!!" I waited patiently until it was released and with my Nintendo Power in hand my dad made a special trip to the video store (Steves TV) to be exact to rent it for me in the middle of the week after school.

I put my $5 down that I got from spending 6 hours with the push mower cutting the grass at the farm the weekend before and in return for Super Mario RPG in a little clear box that told me to be kind and rewind.

When I got home I had to plow through homework before I was allowed to play. It was definately a good insentive to get me to get my work done that's for sure. So after dinner I had about an hour or two to play before bed.

I sat crossed legged infront of the old wood panelled TV like 3' from the screen ready to take it all in. After setting up my account and watching the cut screens I was ready to play, but that's when I realised something! This Mario game was different!

So used to the freedom of fighting sequences I didn't understand this whole turn based play. All I wanted to do was to jump on their heads and shoot fireballs at enemies! This was something weird and scary!

I honestly gave it my best to like the game. That was a hard earned $5 rental cost wasted if I didn't like it. Still no matter the time I put in each night and all that weekend it didn't get better. Why was there so much text to read? Who is Geno and Mallow? Why the hell are we partnering with Bowser?!?! It was too much for me to comprehend as a kid and I returned it all bitter I spent my money on a game that was so horrible.

Now that I look at the game and get how the mechanics work it's a really fun and solid game! It brings all the aspects of a Square game to the Mario world and does it in a fun way filled with Easter eggs, funny dialogue and in depth gameplay. Sure it's a short RPG but it's still really fun.

I don't blame myself as a kid for not liking it. I had Dragon Warrior for the NES too and I hated that game back then but love it now. I guess I was just used to arcade bash em ups and linear platforming titles at the time.

What are some games you hated as a kid but love today?

PS this was written on my iPhone so excuse any auto correct or spelling errors.

One game I didn't like growing up as a kid was The Sims. Now that I am older, I am living it because I feel like I have to get a job and a girlfriend and keep my mood up.

:teehee:

Spoiler
I lied. I Always loved The Sims

I'd like to think I haven't yet been sucked into a video game reality, so I'm pretty sure I don't live any game currently.

Spoiler
I hated Zelda when I was a kid, at the time I didn't understand it. I really didn't know anyone else who even knew about video games, let alone played them. So I didn't even understand the concept of genres. At that point in time I had only played Super Mario Bros. ... and games like Super Mario Bros. It wasn't until much later that I went back to it and loved it.

I despised the Zelda games when I was a kid. I don't know why, but I thought they were stupid and boring (based on my 10 minutes of playing). Funny thing is that Zelda is pretty much my favorite game series.

The other was Street Fighter II. I remember going to an arcade once, and playing Turbo for the first time. I got murdered and tried again. After losing again, I gave up on the game and for years hated the series because of that one experience. Years later, I was 14 (I think) and I had $8 left on the Wii Shop Channel. For some odd reason, I downloaded Super Street Fighter II and played it. Initially I didn't care about it, but after a while I started enjoying it. I guess the less steep difficulty from the arcade to SNES made a difference in my liking of the game.

But hopefully one day I can live in the world of Zelda or Street Fighter. Actually, scratch that. I never want to live in a world where a single man can cause the ground to shake with a simple stomp and cause the entire screen to go black. D=

Not really I've always been pretty open and willing to enjoy almost any genre of game.
