As pretty much all of you guys know we have a section for game collections on the site. The plan is to make it so that members will be able to make a list of the games and things that they have in their collections and host them on the site here. It allows an easy and effective way to track and display your video game collection so that other can see it.

Im the guy who designed and made the website, with the exception to the forums, and Im not the best at database work. With having 3 jobs going at once plus freelance and other stuff its just too much on the go for me to put into making this section of the site. So this is where you guys come in.

We need someone who is very proficient at database work and websites so that they can create something that functions smoothly, very user friendly and is easy to use. Here is what we are looking for it to do.

[*]Allow users to add video games to a list that is their own on their own page.
[*]Allow is so that when a user manually enters a game into their collection that game becomes a part of a larger list, designated per system so that other members, instead of having to write in manually what games they have, will be able to select the game from other user generated content and add it to their list.
[*]Allow users to easily remove and add notes to each game that they have. So that they can add in if its a collectors edition or that its some rare version or something of that nature.
[*]Allow a few versions of displaying the listing of games. Either with box art or just a general list.
[*]Allow users to compare their list of games with other people who have collections. Showing a section of the same games, not the same games and other things of that nature.
[*]List nicely seperated into different consoles and platforms.
[*]Give the viewer the option of chosing a few different formats of viewing the lists. For example alphabetically, by genre, by developer, by system etc.

These are just some general ideas so that it can be a very unique setup that noplace else has. Something that makes TGH stand out from the rest of the sites out there with the ability to interact with other lists and such.

We are looking for volunteers who are able to do this kind of work. Nobody is getting paid on the staff of this site, so if you are expecting anything like that, please do not contact us. We are doing it because we like to do it and we like to make all the Sidekicks and Henchmen out there happy. When you guys are happy it makes us happy and makes us want to do more for you guys. We want someone in the same frame of mind.

So if you can and want to help out shoot me an email at yankees1@hotmail.com with the title "TheGameHeroes.com Collections Database" and let me know what you can do, what other stuff youve done and things of that nature.

Thanks everyone for checking out this thread and hopefully we can get this section of the site up and running for everyone!

You should totally run this as a competetion. Get everyone who wants in to submit a collection app and choose the best one.

Realistically. The database part of this project is going to be minimal. A few tables, some constraints, a key or two, maybe an index if it gets biggles. The big part will be the php/ruby/perl/whatever you write the app in.

Had you asked me four years ago I probably would've given it a go.:)

But I haven't coded for so long I don't think I could do a good job now.

I like the idea of picking from user-submitted content, kind of like rateyourmusic or last.fm or something.

I've got my hands full with two jobs, healingtouch, and admining the forums. Not as much as you're currently undertaking, but I'm sort of out of my element with database coding in the long run. I haven't used it in over a year, and my overall experience with it was pretty minimal and has mostly trickled out of my head due to lack of usage after graduating.

However, if anybody needs graphical assistance for any of this, like buttons or even ideas, I'll gladly assist with that stuff.

I don't really have time/motivation for that, but I would have done something easier for the game database.

You should rip off a list of video games from another website with a code, it would be much faster.

Try me in a year and maybe I'd be able to help. Now though there is no way I could do such a thing.

You're asking for a lot with no monetary or otherwise reward. It's not just a simple script. I don't think anyone will do this for free, it's the kind of thing that people pay hundreds for to get done.

Myself I could do it in ugly PHP using MySQL, as I've done something similar with an own blog system including user account creation, comments etc. - it wouldn't be too far out to let anyone add their images to a db. The work part comes into play when you want to sort it all nicely in a gallery for each user. That has to be integrated into the forums from what I understood too, which makes it even harder.

You would bring the values from the database into some object in PHP, then sort based on the field that was selected. To make it a bit more efficient, you could save that information in the user's browser as well as some hashcode which should match the databases to see if it's changed or not. After that you just manipulate that structure ... and that isn't difficult.

Overall, this isn't a terribly difficult thing to do ... although if you were hiring someone to do it, in the "real" world, it would cost you quite a bit, simply because it involves a database. It is a bit time consuming, though.

This is actually a pretty complicated project, theres lots of concerns surrounding the sorting and corrolation of data. This is one project where you've got a huge toss up between scalability and performance. But yea, it actually is a pretty massive project. Plus your looking at a pretty massive database in terms of physical size.

What do you mean? NULL is a non-value. That question doesn't really make sense in terms of transact-sql or any other type of db language that I've had experience with. I suppose if I had to answer, NULL came first. Since any feild in a row without a value is considered NULL.

Wait. Are we talking about NULL in terms of logic or NULL pointers or NULL strings or what?

Jandlecack: SQL - Given a data page in an index can store 8060 bytes of real data, how many leaf level pages and how many intermediate level pages would be required to store 17959 rows in an index on a char(60) column? (Come on, this is an easy one).
