I bailed after the 3rd book, all the art was so fucking terrible.

You mean of the prologue?

The third story had perfectly fine art, plus it was pretty funny. I like how they pulled off Deadpool Dog and used the Watcher.

Yeah, I didn't have any real issues with the art until the final issue. It was the worst art I've ever seen in a comic. Plus the covers were pretty cool too.

I mentioned in a YBIR thread that I picked up Morning Glories Vol. 1 after Mongo and Link's segment on it. Just finished reading it and damn was it good. I forget if they mentioned it out of the show, but Nick Spencer came out of nowhere and already he's written some of best stories I've read this year. Great book and great recommendation guys!

Side note: how has the release schedule been on this book so far? Like I said I picked up the first trade and that's how I plan to read it. I know Spencer plans on 100 issues and that he's already put out 8. I'm just hoping he isn't going to be like Millar with Kick-Ass where it comes out whenever.

I just have trouble not making erection jokes when I see that book at the store. Yeah, I'm mature.

My current thought is ... I'm going to have to find some dough every month to buy Super Dinosaur because I dug the promo-issue.

On the fence about Super Dinosaur, the promo issue was interesting but it was basically just a lot of "setting up the plot" so I can't even judge if it'll be good overall, if I had to actually pay money for that issue I'd have been sorely disappointed. Kirkman is always all about "Tell Don't Show", and I'm not sure how the hell that works for him because it's the exact opposite of what you usually want to do with a story.

As for Morning Glories it's been on a consistent weekly schedule. Shit is awesome town USA.

Well, issue 2 comes out next week. I'm sure he'll do something ridiculous with it.

For those who don't read or have any interest in the Green Lantern books, this is going to come off as a stupid fanboy rant. For those who do read and follow the GL titles, I'm curious about your thoughts.

So after reading Tony Bedard's last three issues (Green Lantern Corps 62 and Green Lantern Aftermath 1&2) I'm starting to worry about his Green Lantern New Guardians series coming up. Simply put: those three books were borderline terrible. Corps pushes back all of the character growth Kyle Rayner has made since 2006. In Aftermath he messed up the fact that Kyle and Guy are honor guards. That just gives me the impression of a lazy writer (and lazy editors). And for those thinking "it doesn't really matter because in two weeks everything changes" the fact is the GL titles aren't getting affected by the relaunch (outside of renumbering).

Now I'm not saying the guy is a terrible writer for this. He did a decent job throughout the War of the Green Lanterns, but I'm now wondering if those books were good because it was an event that was planned out by all of the creative teams.

Bedard is doing good with the Flashpoint stuff he's written, but once again, maybe it's all mapped out?

Either way, that is kind of scary, because that's the one GL book I was going to check out.

I'm pretty sure this constitutes a stupid question, but how does one follow current comics? I understand going to a comic store and just looking around would probably do it, but I live the fuck away from it, and I don't want to have to take a bloody hajj every time I want to look at new issues.

You get a pull list at a store or website.

This is a list of titles you ask to have a copy of. When they come in they put a copy of each issue to the side for you.
If you do it online it works like a subscription to a magazine. You can also, depending on the publisher, get actual subscriptions per year.

You'd learn more about what's currently happening or what's going to start by shooting the shit with the people working at the comic shop than just browsing around.

There's also Wizard, which recently went digital only (:()
And plenty of comic related sites. The number of websites that discuss comics and trends is ludicrous (SuperHeroHype, AintItCool, IGN, etc)

If you live too far away from a comic book store and it's a pain in the ass to get to it there are services online that you can use to get comics online.

http://www.dcbservice.com/ is a great service where you can get all your comics 40-50% off the cover price in 1 bulk shipment at the end of the month.

Thanks for the tips. The only thing is I don't know any way of finding/starting a comic (short of going to the store and talking to the guy). Can anyone recommend series to look into?

Also, I'm going to assume that this would become a relatively expensive hobby.

It isn't a cheap hobby, no, but I can help give you some suggestions if you tell me the kind of stuff you're into, and try to steer you in a direction that won't have you breaking your wallet from the get go lol. Do you like DC heroes? If so you might want to just wait for the "new 52" starting in September since that is going to be the perfect jumping on point for a new reader. If you like Marvel heroes, let us know who you like and we'll point you in the right direction or if you think you'd like some off-beat non-superhero type stuff, we can suggest some of those as well.

I actually had a point not too long ago where I went ape-shit going through wikipedia looking at all the different marvel and DC comics, heroes, universes, etc. It's insane how expansive it is XD

One series that interested me in particular was the Green Lantern. I've also heard good things about Spawn and Deadpool, and they both sound like my cup of tea.

You have to take into account continuity, the only issue.

What you can do is look up stuff outside mainstream superheroes.

I would personally suggest the 100 Bullets series, Fables, Runaways and Powers. Mainly 100 Bullets, fucking amazing but long series, but the plot is so tight that everything comes back to play a role eventually.

For superheroes, those guys can point out the best moments to jump on, but an easier time with third party publishers would include Hellboy (made of mini-series that jump all over the timeline), Darkness and Witchblade.

There's also midtowncomic and tfaw to scope out issues. They have a lot of back-issues and nick and dent stuff which is massively marked down.

I'd suggest if you find a title you want to start reading, just do some research on it to see where the next arc begins. Trades usually stop and start with the arc. Then, if you want to catch up go to your library or someplace and see if they got em. It's pretty handy, I've caught up (and kept up) with many series' thanks to my library system.

As for particular titles to look into ... I think Spawn is crap, to be honest. I haven't read a lot of Green Lantern, but what I did wasn't bad, the main issue is nothing seems to stay compartmentalized, so the stories reference stuff that happened a long time ago.

You might want to read stuff like Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, etc ... but honestly if you start signing up for the main stuff you'll have a $300 a month tab. Most of that stuff is easier and cheaper to keep up with in trades ... even if you just buy the trades instead of checking them out through a library (Buying a 6 issue trade is about the same as paying $2.50 an issue ... which is over a dollar under the cover price of Marvel books)

Stuff you might want to check out on an issue to issue basis is like ... stuff you really want to read. Some events, or some miniseries, for example.

Some specific titles: Invincible and Walking Dead. Yeah ... both Kirkman books ... both awesome.

Deadpool is usually good stuff, but honestly there's so many Deadpool books out there now I wouldn't really be able to tell you where to start or which is better. They're kinda overexposing him now.

This is precisely what I did. I haven't been collecting comics for going on 15 years now. Not because I didn't like them but because I was pulled in different directions in life. When I heard about the reboot I figured it was a perfect time to jump back in. Went to the local comic and game story (head to Olympic Cards and Comics in Lacey, WA if you ever have the chance), started to shoot the shit with the owner and and staffer and started a subscription box with five titles to get me going. $3/book x 5 books = $15/month with taxes. Less than my cell phone that I never even use.

Not only that but I got the low down on the second floor they are adding for gaming only, got registered for their weekly M:TG tournament and their weekly Battletech gaming session. All this because I stopped in for a few minutes.

The owner Gabi says anytime you can come in and just read any of the shit they have out. Why? Because they are comics and they are meant to be read. They have couches, chairs, all sorts of shit.

Oh yeah, and a six man X-men arcade game. That's a pretty good kicker.
